ITV confirmed in June 2011 that the show would be returning for a sixth series in 2012. In October 2011, it was announced that neither David Hasselhoff nor Michael McIntyre will be returning as judges. Despite rumours of Amanda Holden being absent for the auditions stage, she confirmed via her Twitter account that she would be participating in the entire series. In December 2011, it was announced that Simon Cowell would be returning as a full time judge for the series. On 2 January, David Walliams and Alesha Dixon were confirmed as judges, with Dixon leaving her role on Strictly Come Dancing. Holden missed some of the auditions due to her pregnancy and due to being critically ill after giving birth.
